Two of the most popular materials for fences are timber and vinyl. Both materials have their advantages, but which is the better choice for your backyard? Below are the benefits of each type of fence compared to help you make the right selection.
Why choose a wooden fence?
Lower cost
If you’re on a tight budget, a wooden fence is likely the most affordable option. While it depends on the type or wood/vinyl you choose, your standard timber fence often costs less ($10 to $30 per ft) than your standard vinyl fence of the same size ($15 to $40 per ft).
Natural aesthetic
Wood has a warmth and character that blends beautifully with plants and traditional home styles. You can also stain and paint it any color, and change your mind later. While there are some styles of vinyl fence that are designed to imitate the look of wood, they often cannot fully replicate its textured look.
Environmentally-friendly
For eco-conscious homeowners, a wooden fence could be a greener option. Wood is a renewable resource and it can be recycled at the end of its life. Plastics like vinyl are meanwhile petroleum-based and can be harder to recycle. That said, it’s possible to buy vinyl fences made from recycled plastic.
Why choose a vinyl fence?
Easier installation
When it comes to fence build out and repair, vinyl fences are typically easier to work with. Some are designed to cleanly slot together and in many cases parts can be easily replaced. This makes installing such fences potentially a much easier DIY project. More complex vinyl fencing however may still benefit from hiring pros.
Lower maintenance
Vinyl fences don’t have to be regularly repainted like wooden fences. They also don’t rot, warp or get eaten by bugs like timber. You may occasionally need to wipe down vinyl fences with soapy water, but otherwise they’re a low maintenance solution.
Greater lifespan
Your average vinyl fence is also likely to outlast your average wooden fence. On average, wooden fences last 15 to 20 years before needing to be replaced (pressure-treated timber can last a little longer). Vinyl fences meanwhile typically last 20 to 30 years with higher-grade vinyl designed to last as much as 50 years.
Wooden or vinyl fencing?
If you’re on a tight budget, a timber fence is likely to be the best option. Wooden fences also have the advantage of being more environmentally-friendly and may suit traditional homes better. Just be prepared to repaint them every few years and understand that you may have to replace them sooner than a vinyl fence.
Those wanting a low maintenance fencing option should definitely choose vinyl. In some ways, such fences can be a better investment as they last longer and you likely won’t have to spend as much money on repairs. You will however have to pay more upfront. Vinyl fences also tend to be better suited to modern homes where their synthetic appearance is less likely to look out of place.
