 When you have a new baby, every second of your day becomes concerned with keeping that little human alive. You’ll likely sacrifice everything from sleep to personal hygiene in your quest to achieve that goal. But remember that you also owe it to yourself and your child to care for your own health and wellbeing at this stage. 


After all, who would look after your newborn if you came down with a lingering illness now? Not to mention that helping your health is the best way to prepare the reserves you need for those sleepless nights and long feeding shifts!

But many new parents who are already overwhelmed and pushed to capacity slip into certain personal health mistakes that they may pay for later. To stop you from doing the same, we’re going to consider the most common health no-nos of newborn life, and how to avoid them.


# 1 - Reaching for Fast Foods



When you’ve got a feeding or sleeping baby in your lap, ready meals, takeaways, and other fast food options can seem like the only sustenance available. But remember: your body is recovering right now, and it needs more nutrients than it probably ever has, especially if you’re also breastfeeding!

One of the best ways to make this possible is to simply take a little time for batch cooking before your baby arrives. Equally, don’t be afraid to ask if friends and family can cook a few things for you to get you thriving, rather than just surviving.

# 2 - Staying in the House

A few weeks of nesting in the house is normal and even beneficial when you have a baby, but staying in for too long can quickly become a problem. Not only are you unlikely to move as much as you should when you’re stuck indoors, but you’ll also leave yourself open to going a little stir crazy without fresh air from one week to the next.

To avoid that, try to get out for even a short walk around the block at least once a day. Even if you just head out for ten minutes, both you and your baby will benefit from the effort this takes!

# 3 - Ignoring the Signs of Postnatal Depression

Most new moms are now aware of the risks that postnatal depression poses, but it’s surprising how many already overwhelmed moms either miss or even ignore warning signs like feelings of hopelessness or constant fatigue.
