Speed of Life by Carol Weston is the story of 14 year old Sofia and her life after her mother dies. The book has elements of humor, sadness, and everything in between. Sofia struggles to go on with her life after her mother, a Spanish teacher at her all girls school, dies of an aneurysm. Sofia is just barely getting use to it being her father and her on their own, and she's been struggling with growing up and having feelings for boys with no mother figure to go to about it.

So Sofia decides to start emailing a woman named "Dear Kate", popular for her articles in a teen magazine her friends' read. Meanwhile, on top of everything else, she discovers that her father has been dating someone, and it's getting pretty serious. What's even more surprising to Sofia is who her father has been seeing, which throws her world into a hurricane of events and emotions. Sofia is thrust into a life with a new home, new town, new mother figure, an older sister, and a new love interest all at once.

I don't want to give too much of the story away, but I really loved this book. It is originally a young adult book, but to be honest, I couldn't put it down and I'm 32 years old. So really, it's written for a wide range of ages. If you've ever lost a parent at a young age, Sofia's struggles will resonate with you. If you are the parent of a teen, this book will resonate with you. You will see things from multiple perspectives. You'll see how quickly life can change and you will become attached to the characters.
