Camp Warner Bros Week 2: Crystal Candy with Steven Universe: The Movie

Week 2 of Camp Warner Bros was a bit of a fun, edible science lesson for the kiddos, pairing up Steven Universe with rock candy!

This is a sponsored post in partnership with Warner Brothers Entertainment.

The Crystal Candy experiment uses simple things that most people already have in their homes such as jars, sugar, water, string pencils, and food coloring. It does require a bit of help from an adult because you are using the stove top, but the kiddos will really love watching their crystals materialize. The more time you leave them sit, the bigger the crystals get. My kids each made their own batch. My daughter coated her string with water and then sugar first and my son's was just the plain string. As you can see, my daughter's materialized a lot more. The sugar on the string speeds the process up a bit. Both of my kids love science and this was one they were able to eat afterwards! The instructions for the Crystal Candy is below. Also worth noting, if you happen to have candy flavoring or flavoring extract that can be added to the crystal syrup as well to give each one a different flavor.

The Science Behind The Fun:

As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar. The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!

Extra Science Fun:

Try making two jars of candy. In the first jar - seed your “Crystal Gem” Candy by rolling your string in water and sugar. In the second jar do not seed your string with sugar before growing. Determine if using seed sugar crystals changes the growth rate of your “Crystal Gem” Candy!

After making their Crystal Candy, they sat down to watch Steven Universe: The Movie, which is a really fun musical that provides the lyrics to each song so your kids can sing along.
