How May We Hate You? Notes from the Concierge Desk

If you've ever worked in the hospitality industry, you know that sometimes - okay, maybe all the time- you have those customers that make you really question your sanity. You know the ones. Those who ask the most ridiculous and obvious questions. Those who are convinced that every problem they have is your fault or that you can somehow fix it. Those who assume you are in charge of areas of your work place that are actually another department's work. I've been in this position and while it's funny to look back at now, at the time it made me want to jump in front of a train sometimes.

I recently got a copy of How May We Hate You? Notes from the Concierge Desk written by Anna Drezen and Todd Dakotah Briscoe and it's hilarious! The book originally started with a website and gradually picked up popularity before becoming this hardcover book. It's chock full of stories from two former hotel workers on some of the kinds of customers they have encountered in their time working as hotel concierge in New York. The book is laid out in a fun manner and I couldn't put it down. While I've never worked in a hotel before, I do have experience in retail and anyone else who does, knows this is another area of work where the stories of funny, infuriating, and frustrating customers stack up pretty high. I can really relate to a lot (if not all) of this book. Basically, if you work with the public directly, you need to pick this book up and give it a read. Your sanity will thank you.
