Essential Oils: What You Need To Know

Essential Oils are on everyone's list now-a-days due to their amazing health benefits and household uses. Some can even be used in cooking! I, myself, have started using them within the last year and have been impressed with the uses and benefits of them. Here's what I didn't know, and no one had told me:

Some essential oils could kill you!

Penny Royal has been used for everything from relief of the common cold, stomach issues, muscle spasms, and even relief from menstrual issues. What people DON'T know about this product is that it also increases sweating (which could potentially cause dehydration) and that's the least of your worries. It also causes abortions, liver damage, nervous system damage, lung failure, nausea, vomiting, seizures, and even brain damage. All of that is if you're lucky. It's also been known to cause death. It's especially unsafe for children! Please, PLEASE, do not purchase Penny Royal Essential Oil for any reason! It doesn't even matter what brand it is, just don't do it! The side effects are way worse and outweigh the benefits by a mile!

There are many other essential oils, when not researched properly, can be just as dangerous. For instance, while you will find many things online telling you that some essential oils can be used in drinks or food, I would not suggest doing this at all! Wintergreen essential oil, for example seems, to the uneducated, like it would be okay to ingest, and that could not be the farthest from the truth. Wintergreen is just as bad as Penny Royal and could be deadly if ingested.

Many essential oils need to be mixed with a carrier oil before use or you face all kinds of problems like it burning your skin or have other harmful effects. Even the oils that you would never think would burn or have severe reactions to, are indeed harmful if used improperly. This is why it's important to thoroughly research how to use the desired oils before actually using them.

A lot of essential oils suggested for antibacterial uses should actually be used in conjunction with probiotics.

There are a long list of essential oils that should never, under any circumstance, be used on or around children. Peppermint, eucalyptus, oregano, rosemary, and wintergreen are just a few of those that are harmful to children.

Another thing you need to know is that there are many forms of certain essential oils. For example, while you may think orange oil is just that, there are actually many different versions of orange oil. Some are okay, other's I would be leery of. Eucalyptus is another oil that has many different versions. Typically, when it's suggested to use "eucalyptus oil" no one really specifies which one to use, because no one really thinks there are different ones.

While there ARE essential oils that are great for children and pets, and really are beneficial, it's important to know as much as you can about each one, both benefits, and side effects, before using. Like many, I didn't think to check up on side effects of essential oils because all I kept hearing about were the endless benefits of using them. You don't tend to see too many posts on Pinterest or Facebook about the dangers of them.
